I still use compression, but very sparingly. Even not so good recordings sound a lot better when they can breathe and aren't compressed to death. It takes some practice to get everything to fall in those levels, but I'm glad I did. I set it to -6dB and use it to see if there are any Peaks that need attention. It's completely changed the way I approach mixing now and I feel like I should have been doing this the whole time regardless of SC.Īs I said, I use the Limiter as a guide when I'm mixing, but I remove it now because all of my Peaks hover around -6dB and I don't need it. So, I went back and remixed 5 tracks so they fell in those original CD ranges, uploaded to SC, and other than the MP3 conversion artifacts, they were unaltered. My tracks, although they were Peaking at -3dB had a much louder RMS and K-14 readout. On all of the CD's, no matter the genre, I was seeing RMS of -18dB, K-14 of -3dB, and Peak of -6dB. I ripped about 20 tracks from a wide range of music from my older 1st Edition CD's and analyzed them in Studio One. I tried to upload some CD tracks to see how SC handled a professional track and noticed there was no change on the older CD after uploading, but there was on the newer (louder) CD's. I tried all the recommendations I read on the net for uploading to Soundcloud but even after that they were still being altered. I've recently been uploading my songs to Soundcloud and noticed right away that they were too loud and SC was compressing them and trying to normalize them. I set my Start market at 0 Seconds, my End marker 2 seconds after the song ends or is done fading out, and all of my tracks are consistent that way.Īlso, I only use the Limiter for the Peak/RMS meter and to see if I need to adjust my levels. 5 Seconds and if they fade out, end with a fadeout with the Master fader automated.

I put an Envelope on the Master fader and use it for my Song fadeouts. That way when I export them, they are ready to either be burned or converted to MP3 without having to put them in another editor to do trimming and fades. #2: I like to do my mastering, including trimming and fadeouts, on each Song. If I put the Limiter in the Post section, the Master fader controls the Input level going in to the Limiter and I don't like doing that because. #1: I like to use my Master fader as my main system volume control. I put the Limiter as an Insert (Pre-Fader) for a couple of reasons.
